Real talk: Figuring out what to wear for family photos in Perth can feel like a mission.
But it doesn’t have to be. What to wear for family photos in Perth is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive. And it’s easy to see why! Choosing outfits can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re juggling busy schedules, strong-willed little ones, and a wardrobe that suddenly feels uninspiring. But it doesn’t have to be complicated.
So if you’re standing in your wardrobe, wondering what to wear for family photos in Perth and feeling overwhelmed, thinking “Nothing fits, nothing matches, and my kids only want to wear Superhero shirts,” take a breath. I’ve got you.
Welcome to the FAQ series! Let’s make choosing what to wear simple and stress-free.
1. Start with Mum’s Outfit First
You’re the heart of the family. When you feel good, it shows, and that confidence filters into every frame.
Pick something you feel beautiful in. Something that fits well, moves with you, and doesn’t need constant adjusting.
A flowy dress, a textured knit, or a soft blouse with jeans. If you feel like yourself in it, that’s the right choice. Build the rest of the family’s outfits around you, not the other way around.
Need inspiration? Ask me about my client wardrobe! I’ve got a few pieces mums love borrowing. (Bonus is that it saves you money!)

2. Choose Colours Based on Location
Here in Perth’s northern suburbs, we’re spoiled for location options! Beaches, bushland, grassy fields. Where you shoot matters when choosing a colour palette and figuring out what to wear for family photos in Perth.
- For beach sessions: Soft neutrals like beige, cream, white, pale blue, sage, and blush work beautifully.
- For bushland or grassy fields: Go for earthy tones: rust, denim, sage, cream, mustard, or muted greens.
The aim isn’t to match, but to blend. Choose colours that complement one another and feel grounded in nature. This adds to the “production value” of the photo. It can elevate the look of your photos from nice to magnificent!

3. Texture > Pattern
To keep the focus on your connection, skip busy patterns or logos (sorry, Marvel and DC!).
Instead, add interest with textures — linen, denim, chunky knits, layers, lace, embroidery. They photograph beautifully and create subtle depth without distraction. (again, production value!)

4. Comfort Wins
If your child hates that ‘nice shirt’ or your partner is fidgeting in stiff pants, it’ll show in your photos. Prioritise comfort. Let the kids go barefoot if we’re shooting outdoors. Let personalities shine. Involve them in the decision-making by giving them a choice of 2 or 3 options. This can make all the difference in how they feel about the session as a whole!
My sessions are relaxed and movement-filled. Your outfits should work with that, not against it.

Final Thoughts: Connection Over Clothes
At the end of the day, it’s not really about the outfits. It’s about capturing your family as you are. The way you laugh together, the hugs, the chaos, the love.
So wear what makes you feel good. Choose colours that feel like your family. And trust me to take care of the rest.
