You absolutely can, and you absolutely should include grandparents in a family session.
Grandparents bring so much richness to a session. Not just in who they are, but in what they represent. They carry stories, history, softness, and a different kind of love that your children will one day want to remember.
This blog will walk you through how extended family sessions work, what to expect, and why including grandparents in a family session is one of the most meaningful choices you can make.

Why Include Grandparents in Your Family Photos?
Because these are the people who’ve loved you the longest, who hold a special place in their hearts for you AND your kids.
Because your kids light up when they see them.
Because time moves quickly and you will never regret having those memories.
Extended family photos celebrate connection across generations. They are more than a nice extra. They are a gift for your children and a treasure for the future. Don’t wait for a family wedding or event to get these photos. There is no reason to wait, if anything, they are more important to book sooner rather than later.

How It Works
If you’re including grandparents in a family session or any extended family, here’s what to expect:
- I recommend choosing The Storyteller Collection (from my pricing guide) to give us plenty of time for groupings, individual moments, and everything in between
- We will plan ahead to include a mix of:
- Full group shots
- Individual family units
- Grandparent-grandchild moments
- Candid interactions (these are always favourites)
- You’ll receive a gallery that reflects not just who’s in your family, but how you all connect.
If we’re working with individuals who have mobility or accessibility needs, I’ll choose locations and session times that allow everyone to participate comfortably. This includes having a location that has parking nearby. Locations that are easily accessible and have flat terrain. I bring chairs/a bench seat to sit on for photos and also when they are not having photos.

Tips for a Smooth Extended Family Session
- Keep it relaxed. Let go of the idea that everyone has to be looking or smiling at once.
- Coordinate outfits with a colour palette, not matching clothes
- Make sure the kids are fed and well-rested before the session
- Have one contact person coordinating the details so everything runs smoothly.
- Having a list to make sure all different groups are covered. This is really handy when its a large family group.
- Give everyone a heads-up on what to expect and remind them to enjoy the moment, not worry about perfection.

These Are the Moments You’ll Cherish
The squeeze of a little hand in an older one.
A knowing smile between generations.
The way your mum still looks at you like you’re her baby, even while she’s holding your baby.
These photos are more than just images. They are a way to honour your story and the people who helped shape it.
