Shane & Kristy | Swan Brewery Wedding

Welcome to my last wedding of the 2016/17 season!! I had a ton of inquiries for weddings in April/May 2017 but being pregnant and having a due date in May (plus 2 other little ones to look after) It just didn’t feel comfortable taking those bookings (literally and figuratively!) Kristy found me through my advert on easyweddings.com and we hit it off straightaway. They had a simple wedding plan – get married and party with their friends. A beautiful ceremony at the Swan Brewery right on the river followed by a casual reception. We were blessed with such a lovely sunset I snuck them out for 10 minutes to capture some stunning images while their friends and family enjoyed all sorts of delicious food. Thanks, Shane and Kristy for trusting me to capture your wedding day just the way you wanted to remember it, especially when I was 30 weeks pregnant! Another special thank you to my photographer partner in crime Amanda of Amanda Afton Photography for shooting with me and carrying my bags!

Baby Announcements | Maternity and Gender Reveals!

When I announced my first pregnancy back in 2012, a handful of other people I knew were also pregnant … but only a handful. Then in 2014 when I was pregnant for the second time, there were more friends I knew when were also pregnant and expecting babies throughout 2015. When we got pregnant again in 2016 – it seemed like half of Perth did as well. And not just having 2017 babies, they were all due in May 2017! Crazy!
My favourite week of 2017 so far has been the week (9 days actually) when 3 close friends of mine all told me (separately) that they were pregnant. This made my heart sing as their individual journies hadn’t been straight forward and it was something definitely worth celebrating. Since then I seem to have had lots of baby related photo shoots and am excited to share some of my favourites here with you. 2 pregnancy announcements and a gender reveal shoot – I had so much fun celebrating with these couples and can’t wait to follow their stories and see their precious bundles later in the year.
If you are pregnant and have a creative pregnancy announcement or gender reveal idea you want photographed, contact me now to book your spot! I’m taking some time off to have a baby myself and its best to get these things booked as soon as possible! Just click the contact me tab up the top left and get that conversation started!

Naomi | Maternity

I have had the privilege of following Naomi’s growing family since she first contacted me to organise a maternity shoot when she was pregnant with her first! I got to follow her gorgeous son through his first year, photographing him at 3 and 6 months and then again when I found out he was going to become a big brother! I met Naomi down at the beach for a casual mini maternity session which was just so lovely to photograph. Being able to photograph a couple/family over a number of years is such a privilege – one of the perks of the job!! Can’t wait to meet their newest bundle – due in May!

Mums with Bubs | Lifestyle Fitness

So many wonderful things happened when I sat down and search google for a ‘mums with bubs fitness class in Perth’. Up popped Jenine’s business, Mums with Bubs Fitness. I couldn’t believe my luck, a fitness class I could take my kid to (so creche/babysitting costs!) that was close by and was affordable for the family who was back to living on one income. Not only did I get out the house and to work on my fitness, Jenine’s classes have a special focus on the relationship with your baby. Including them in your workout meant getting quality time for you 2 times over! As another mum in business, it came up that she wanted some more photos for her website as the business was evolving quickly and I was a photographer. We organised our first shoot of a class in action (bonus, I got to bring my kid to work with me!) and we haven’t looked back. Jenine has become a wonderful friend and business colleague. I love seeing her passion for promoting a healthy relationship with your new postpartum body as well as finding an activity that produces a happy mum and happy (and often sleepy) baby! Win win! Our latest photo shoot was quite an epic one to arrange. Initially organised for November 2016, the weather in Perth was just not co-operating. We had a super cool start to summer and it just wasn’t warm enough to do a 6 am beach shoot. Finally, after about 4-5 cancelled dates (because of RAIN IN SUMMER) we made it … on February 26 we met at the beach at 6am, me at 28 weeks pregnant and Jenine with her husband and 2 young kids. We had a blast!

If you are interested in pre and post natal fitness you really should check out Mums with Bubs Fitness. Like, really.

Jess and Tom | Sunset

‘What can I do to get better at photography?’

‘What camera do you use?’

‘I was thinking of upgrading.’

I get this question a lot. Early on when I just bought my camera I would look at other peoples work and think ‘to get that shot I would need a new lens and a strobe light’ OR ‘if I could only have bought that camera I could get that effect’ and so on and so forth. Now, being older and wise (and still with the same camera body I started with) I know the answer is almost always to practice. You want to get better? You need to practice, practice and practice a bit more. Sure, you can’t achieve an off camera flash effect without a strobe or flash of some kind. But you CAN practice posing techniques on your clients (or friends you roped in to help you practice), speaking to them, bettering your composition, working with the sun at different times of the day … the list goes on.

I find all sorts of excuses not to practice but I know the times I have pays dividends when I’m with a paying client and I can nail a shot quickly and not just guess and check on the day.

Here is an example of my practice session with a previous bride and groom. I asked if they could help me out so I could practice a technique (off camera flash at sunset) and they were more than happy to help me out. This was what I ended up with. From the session, I got better at my flash position and power as well as which settings to change quickly.

Because I did this (and not just this once … it’s a technique I’ve practiced more than a few times!) when I had the opportunity to do something similar at a wedding – I was so much more confident I could pull it off and wow my clients. This is from Shane and Kristy’s wedding from March this year. Definitely worth it, don’t you think?
